Did you show up to school this year and suddenly everyone was wearing plaid shirts? How did everyone decide on that so randomly? Well, there are entire companies dedicated to figuring that out.
Investment bank Piper Jaffray surveyed 7,200 teens (average age 16) in 41 states about everything from how they spend their money and what they like to wear to what they like to watch and listen to—and some of the results might really surprise you.
Okay, so you practically live at the mall, but you may be shocked by how much of your babysitting money you actually spend on new clothes and accessories. Researchers found that this year, the average teenager spent $1,069 (!!!) on fashion, and went on more than 29 shopping trips annually.
On average, most teens don’t like to stick to one clothing brand, instead mixing it up and experimenting with different looks. Individuality matters more than sticking to the same brands as everyone else, which is why many classic mall brands are becoming yesterday’s news.
Business Insider took a look at the clothing brands that are going in and out of style. In general, girls everywhere love leggings, Lululemon yoga pants, crop tops, high-waisted pants and skirts, Nike sneakers, and boots. Here are the top 5 “up-trending” brands for teen girls, according to the report:
- Brandy Melville
- American Eagle
- Free People
- Urban Outfitters
When you combine guys and girls, the results showed the top clothing brand is Nike, followed by American Eagle, and Forever 21. According to the report, here are the top 5 “down-trending” brands:
- Abercrombie & Fitch
- Justice/Limited Too
What do you think of the results? Do they match up with what’s hot at your school? What about you—what are your fave brands? Let us know in the comments.
