Evicted persons from Abonema Wharf community protest demolition, seizure of homes

Enugu—EVICTED persons from Abonema Wharf Water Front
community in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have protested
alleged impunity of Rivers State government in continuing to
develop the seized land in contention, despite the
intervention of the National Human Rights Commission
The victims, through their lawyer, Mr. Chibueze Okorie, in a
five-point application before the commission, which held a
two-day public inquiry in Enugu into petitions against some
state governments in the South East zone over alleged
human rights abuses, unwarranted demolitions and seizures
of people’s homes and lands, asked the commission to
prevail on the government to stop further development.
In a an application numbered C/2013/9086/HQ, they sought
for “an order issuing provisional/interim measures of
protection over the subject matter of the complaint before
this Commission to wit, restraining the 1st respondent
(Attorney General of Rivers State), either by itself or by its
servants, agents, privies.
“There is a pending before this commission a complaint
against the respondents for the unlawful eviction of
Abonema Wharf community and the demolition of their
homes, lives, livelihoods and structures.
“The 1st respondent has consistently manifested a lack of
respect for due process and decency as regards its
inordinate ambition to acquire, expropriate and deal with
the Abonema wharf waterfront land , subject matter of the
complaint, without respect for the human rights of the
resident community it evicted, and will continue in that
tendency unless otherwise restrained.”
The commission’s 3-man panel, headed by Dr. Chidi
Odinkalu, ordered that the parties returned to Port Harcourt
at a later date to be communicated to them, as the
respondents opposed vehemently that the application be
formally moved due to unresolved issue of jurisdiction.
